How to Make a Drawstring Pouch Using a 3" x 4½" FPP Block

Turn your FPP blocks into an adorable handmade drawstring pouch! This pattern uses a 3" x 4½" FPP block and creates a pouch that finishes at approximately 7" x 6".

 

 

You need:

  • (1) FPP small block (finished size: 3" x 4 ½") - A
  • Outer fabric               (1) Fat Eighth

Cut,

      • (1) 8 ½" x 6 ½"E
      • (1) 3" x 6 ½"C
      • (1) 1 ½" x 6 ½"D
      • (1) 5" x 2"B
  • Inner fabric               (1) Fat Eighth (9" x 21" cut fabric)

Cut, (2) 8 ½" x 6 ½"F

  • (2) 16" strings

 

 

Note:

§  The cutting instructions include ¼" seam allowance.

§  RST = Right Sides Together

§  Sew the pieces with RST.

§  Sew with ¼" seam allowance.

 

Instructions:

1.    Sew Rectangles B to both the right and left sides of Block A. Press seams.

2.    Sew Rectangle C to the top and Rectangle D to the bottom. Press seams. (Front exterior)

3.    Sew the front exterior piece from Step 2 to Rectangle F using a 1" seam allowance. Press seam open.

4.    Sew Rectangles E and F together using a 1" seam allowance. Press seam open. (Back exterior)

 

 

 

 

5.    RST, layer the exterior pieces and secure with pins. 

6.    On the front exterior piece, mark ¾" away from the center seam on both sides.

 

 

 

7.    Sew from one marked point to the other on the front exterior side, as shown.

8.    Sew around the inner exterior, leaving a 4" opening for turning.

 

 

 

 

9.    Trim the corners.

 

 

 

10. Press the seams open on both sides.

 

 

11. Turn the exterior piece right side out through the opening, then sew the opening closed.

 


 

12.  Reinsert the interior, then topstitch ¾" from the edge all the way around the pouch.

 

 

 

13. Insert the strings and tie the ends.
