Wave Quilting Tutorial: How to Quilt Beautiful Waves on a Domestic Sewing Machine

Have you ever wanted to try quilting beautiful, flowing waves on your domestic sewing machine? This wave quilting technique is a fun way to add movement and texture to your quilt, and the best part is that you don’t need a longarm machine to achieve this look. However, a little bit of preparation is needed before you begin. In this tutorial, I’ll share my process and tips for creating smooth, wavy quilting lines using a regular home sewing machine.

 

 

To create nice, gentle wavy lines for quilting, I designed a wave template and used a Hera marker to transfer the lines onto my quilt sandwich. I printed the template on regular copy paper at first, but the paper was a little too thin, which made tracing a little bit challenging than I expected. For better stability, I recommend printing the template on a thicker paper, such as cardstock.

Also, tracing all of the lines with a Hera marker can be a bit tiring on your wrist, especially for a larger quilt. If you prefer, using an erasable fabric pen may be a more comfortable option for marking your quilting lines.

  

  

To create evenly spaced wave lines, be sure to measure the distance before marking each new line. Keeping the spacing consistent will help your quilting look neat and balanced. For this quilt, I spaced my wave lines 2" apart. 

 

 

I basted my quilt using basting spray. First, I marked all of the wave lines, then machine quilted along the marked lines using a walking foot. I started quilting from the center of the quilt and worked my way toward the outside edges. Don’t rush—take your time and sew slowly, especially when pivoting around the curves of the waves. Gently guide your quilt as you follow the lines to create smooth, flowing curves.

 

 

I also tried free-motion quilting on my BERNINA Q16, but I found it challenging and wasn’t able to get the results I wanted. Using a walking foot was much easier for me, and it worked beautifully for this project.

Of course, if you have a preferred quilting method, go for it! This is simply the way I approached this quilt, and I wanted to share my process with you. I hope you found this tutorial helpful and feel inspired to try machine quilting on your own!
