PATCHWORK MUGS QAL - WEEK 4: Make 6 mug units

Welcome to the PATCHWORK MUGS QAL WEEK 4!! This week, we will be making six mug units.

WEEK 4: Make 6 mug units

The mug unis for the star & heart versions

Have you ever tried a web piecing before? It's a very useful technique and a quick way to sew an entire block using chain piecing.

Web Piecing

Lay all the pieces to make one unit on the table.

1. Starting from the left top, right sides together (RST), sew a1 and b1 together. After sewing the squares, do not cut the threads. Leave the pieced squares where they are.
2. RST, sew Squares a2 and b2 together. Again, leave the pieced squares where they are and do not cut the threads. At this point, the pieced squares from Steps 1 and 2 are connected by the threads.
3. Repeat the process to sew a3/b3, a4/b4 and a5/b5. After sewing the squares a5/b5, you can cut the threads to take all the pieces squares from your sewing machine but do not cut apart! All the pieced squares, a1/b1, a2/b2, a3/b3, a4/b4 and a5/b5 should be connected by the threads. (Chain piercing)

4. Take c1 and sew it to b1.
5. Take c2 and sew it to b2.
6. Repeat the process to sew c3, c4 and c5. After sewing the squares c5, you can cut the threads to take all the pieced squares from your sewing machine but again, do not cut apart.

7. Take d1 and sew it to c1.
8. Take d2 and sew it to c2.
9. Repeat the process to sew d3, d4 and d5. After sewing the squares d5, you can cut the threads to take all the pieced squares from your sewing machine but do not cut apart.

10. Take e1 and sew it to d1.
11. Take e2 and sew it to d2.
12. Repeat the process to sew e3, e4 and e5. After sewing the squares e5, you can cut the threads to take all the pieced squares from your sewing machine but do not cut apart.

Your unit should look like the photo above, with all the rows sewn and each row connected by the threads.

13. Press seam open and sew all the rows together.

Tip: Use pins to secure meeting points of seams for the best results.

To complete the units, Squares B CST to both bottom corners.

The mug units for the tree version

Take a pile of Squares A and one tree unit to make one mug unit. Lay them out and sew the pieces together section by section as instructed in the pattern. Refer to Diagram 10.

Tip: Use pins to secure meeting points of seams for the best results.
